We traveled to Hawaii in Sept of 2012. We started our trip on the Island of Maui and spent much of our time on the western coast of the island near Kanapali and Kapalua. We spend a day driving down the Hana Coast down one lane bridges and through tropical rain forests.
Next we flew to the big island of Hawaii. This was our favorite, so laid back and so many types of geography. We stayed near Mauna Lea and the town of Waimea. We took a day drive down the Hilo coast and visited the US Volcano National Park. Walking through the two mile long crater of Kahaualea was so unworldly, the scale was unimaginable.
Our next island was Kauai. We stayed near Poipuand spent a day driving to the Nepali Coast. The Nepali Coast is on the north of the island and is only assessable by foot, boat, or helicopter. We hiked up and down switchbacks and reach some beautiful gorges and beaches. We went to Waimea Canyon which is 14 miles long and almost three quarter's of a mile deep.
Of course, we ate in many good restaurants which focused on local, organic, and sustainable ingredients. We ate fresh Ahi, Ono, Abalone, shrimp almost every day and sampled so many fish tacos that I lost count. Our favorites restaurants included: Merriman's on Maui and Hawaii, Plantation House on Kauaii, and also Holuakoa Cafe on Hawaii.
